‘I’ll Join You When Hell Freezes Over’

Charter: Neville Longbottom
From: Harry Potter series
Author: JK Rowling

I have never really given Neville Longbottom a lot of importance because I felt that he was just one of the many characters in the Harry Potter book who would have little or almost no significance to the story. Except for that one part in the first book where Neville stood up to Harry, Hermoine and Ron when they were about to sneak out their room at night, he seemed to be a person who was incapable of standing up for himself in any situation. But boy, was I wrong. Neville comes into his own in the Order of the Phoenix when he becomes a part of the Dumbledore’ Army. He even played a major role in helping to fight the Dark Eaters at the Ministry of Magic. It is however, in the sixth and final book, that Neville actually comes into his own and becomes a true and brave wizard. Not only does he continue to maintain a strong loyalty to the Dumbledore’s Army, he also makes sure that he stands up against the Death Eaters and their regime at Hogwarts. He is also responsible for the killing of Nagini, Voldemort’s final Horcrux, thereby helping Harry to kill Voldemort later.

What I Learnt From Neville

Actually, the Harry Potter saga could easily have been about Neville had Voldemort gone for his life instead of Harry’s in the beginning. But the most important lesson that Neville taught me is that when an underdog triumphs and wins there is nothing more satisfying and encouraging. He taught me that if you preserve, you will ultimately reach your goal. Further, he also showed me the importance of friendship as Neville become more focused and confident due to the faith that his friends had in him especially Hermione who always encouraged and supported him. More importantly, he proved to me that it is not just the hero who can gain admiration and respect but also those who have the courage to face their fears and still emerge victorious. For me it was a great moment, when in the final book, Neville refuses to give up and fights against Voldemort till the very end. Remember the part where he answers back Voldemort…that was really such a splendid and amazing moment for me!!! (I have put that part of the book in my favourite quote sections in bold in case you want to relive it:))

In the end I would just like to say that Neville has been really inspirational for me in many ways. and that even though Neville lost so much more than Harry did in his life,he did not let that dominate his life at any stage. Imagine having parents who do not recognize you!!

Note: And what a transformation for Matthew Lewis who played Neville Longbottom in the movie!!! I refuse to believe that there was no magic involved there 😛

Favorite Quotes Of Neville

“There are all kinds of courage,” said Dumbledore, smiling. “It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends. I therefore award ten points to Mr. Neville Longbottom.”
-Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

“Longbottom, if brains were gold, you’d be poorer than Weasley, and that’s saying something.”
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

“Yeah,” said Neville. “That’s how I got this one,” he pointed at a particularly deep gash in his cheek, “I refused to do it. Some people are into it, though; Crabbe and Goyle love it. First time they’ve ever been top in anything, I expect.”
“Alecto, Amycus’s sister, teaches Muggle Studies, which is compulsory for everyone. We’ve all got to listen to her explain how Muggles are like animals, stupid and dirty, and how they drive wizards into hiding by being vicious toward them, and how the natural order is being reestablished. I got this one,” he indicated another slash to his face, for asking her how much Muggle blood she and her brother have got.”
“Blimey, Neville,” said Ron, “there’s a time and a place for getting a smart mouth.”
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

But Voldemort broke off: Harry heard a scuffle and a shout, then another bang, a flash of light, and grunt of pain; he opened his eyes an infinitesimal amount. Someone had broken free of the crowd and charged at Voldemort: Harry saw the figure hit the ground. Disarmed, Voldemort throwing the challenger’s wand aside and laughing. “And who is this?” he said in his soft snake’s hiss. “Who has volunteered to demonstrate what happens to those who continue to fight when the to fight when the battle is lost?”
Bellatrix gave a delighted laugh.
“It is Neville Longbottom, my Lord! The boy who has been giving the Carrows so much trouble! The son of the Aurors, remember?”
“Ah, yes, I remember,” said Voldemort, looking down at Neville, who was struggling back to his feet, unarmed and unprotected, standing in the no-man’s-land between the survivors and the Death Eaters. “But you are a pureblood, aren’t you, my brave boy? Voldemort asked Neville, who stood facing him, his empty hands curled in fists.
“So what if I am?” said Neville loudly.
“You show spirit and bravery, and you come of noble stock. You will make a very valuable Death Eater. We need your kind, Neville Longbottom.”
“I’ll join you when hell freezes over,” said Neville. “Dumbledore’s Army!” he shouted, and there was an answering cheer from the crowd, whom Voldemort’s Silencing Charms seemed unable to hold.
