What’s This Book All About?
Containing a collection of humorous, autobiographical essays this book is authored by Kunal Nayyar, who is popular for his role as Raj Koothrappali on Big Bang Theory. Written in his cheeky, hilarious, and self-deprecating voice, Kunal Nayyar in this book gives us a glimpse of his journey of traversing two continents and finally becoming a confident and successful actor, on a show that continues to win millions of heart around the world.
The Bigger Picture
The book is a series of anecdotes based on Kunal’s life from his childhood, to his family, to his education, to being an actor, and finally culminates with him achieving success, both in the professional and personal sense. In addition, the book is interspersed with notes on airline tissue paper, a short note on multiple Indian festivals and many lists of things. (I particularly liked 13 things I learnt from playing an astrophysicist on TV.)
One of the things I really enjoyed in this book was the manner in which Kunal spoke about his father’s influence in his life. It was genuinely very heartfelt and endearing. Another thing that I especially liked was that fact that Kunal not only acknowledges his Indian ethnicity, he is extremely proud of his background. Though this is not a big deal, it is kind of nice to see someone who connects with his roots while at the same time has a global outlook.
Borrow from a friend/library for a weekend getaway
Of course, this book is not a literary achievement in humour writing, but it is a fun read, basically because the writing is well intended and straight from the heart. If you are a fan of Raj, you might enjoy this book more (Though I was a bit disappointed as the book does not talk much about his life on the sets of BBT).
With less than 300 pages, this book is ideal for when you want to sneak in a few hours of reading on a lazy weekend.
