“What’s life without a little risk?”

Character: Sirius Black
From: Harry Potter Series
Author: J.K. Rowling

It is not the length or pages that a character occupies in a book that matters, but the level of inspiration and loyalty that they inspire in the mind of the readers that really matters in the end. In that respect, Sirius Black was one of the most memorable and engaging characters that exists in the fictional world. From the beginning itself, there is a mystery about Sirius’s character and later when his true identity and purpose is revealed, he undoubtedly becomes one of the most favorite characters of the series.

From a very young age, Sirius never got along with his pure-blood family of wizards. He never really respected their opinions nor was he in favor of the qualities that they endorsed. Everyday, it seemed that he was getting even further away from them and when he got sorted into Gryffindor, it seemed that this was the last straw. His relationship with his family would never be the same and he would always have a rebellious attitude towards them till the very end. Because of this Sirius considered his friends as family and he was always very loyal and loving towards them. This aspect of his personality is depicted so beautifully in the third book when he says, “THEN YOU SHOULD HAVE DIED! DIED RATHER THAN BETRAY YOUR FRIENDS, AS WE WOULD HAVE DONE FOR YOU!”

On the whole, Sirius was extremely childish and immature but at the same time he was also very loyal and strong. He might have been a bully when he was at Hogwarts, but he grew up to be a very strong, mature and loyal friend to those he valued. Though he was sentenced to Azakaban, he never lost his courage and was determined to prove his innocence to the people who mattered to him. Sirius was a good friend and unfortunately paid too heavy a price for his mistakes and casual attitude.

What did I learn from Sirius Black?

Sirius Black is actually one of my most favorite characters because there is so much to his personality and nature that it so difficult to describe it in one place. He taught me that a person is never defined by the history of their families and that every person has the freedom to choose the ideals and values that they consider right and moral. He puts it perfectly when he says, “Besides, the world isn’t split into good people and Death Eaters. We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That’s who we really are.” He showed me that it is really our choices that define our lives and when we have the courage to follow our hearts, we will eventually find people who will love and accept us, just the way we are.

Sirius Black was a complex character and like most of us he too made a lot mistakes. His refusal to learn from his mistakes however ended with his death which I still feel was very unfortunate. But even in his death, he still believed in the power of friendship and was the closest Harry had to a father figure in his life. In the end, Sirius showed us that loyalty is one of the most important and admirable quality that any person can ever possess in their life.

Someone once said that a picture speaks a thousand words, so maybe these pictures will put in perspective what I really wanted to say. Some of them are sad, so please don’t hate me…

Gary Oldman acted as Sirius Black in all the Harry Potter movies!!!!
True 🙂

“I thought you’d come and help your friend,” he said hoarsely. His voice sounded as though he had long since lost the habit of using it. “Your father would have done the same for me. Brave of you, not to run for a teacher. I’m grateful . . . it will make everything much easier. . . .”

“Tell them whatever you like. But make it quick, Remus. I want to commit the murder I was imprisoned for…

“Harry . . . I as good as killed them,” he croaked. “I persuaded Lily and James to change to Peter at the last moment, persuaded them to use him as Secret-Keeper instead of me. . . . I’m to blame, I know it. . . . The night they died, I’d arranged to check on Peter, make sure he was still safe, but when I arrived at his hiding place, he’d gone. Yet there was no sign of a struggle. It didn’t feel right. I was scared. I set out for your parents’ house straight away. And when I saw their house, destroyed, and their bodies . . . I realized what Peter must’ve done . . . what I’d done. . . .”

“Believe me,” croaked Black. “Believe me, Harry. I never betrayed James and Lily. I would have died before I betrayed them.”

“Fulfilling my duty as godfather,” said Sirius, gnawing on the chicken bone in a very doglike way. “Don’t worry about it, I’m pretending to be a lovable stray.”

“He’s not your son,” said Sirius
“He’s as good as,” said Mrs. Weasley fiercely. “Who else has he got?”
“He’s got me!”

He was younger than me,” said Sirius, “and a much better son, as I was constantly reminded.”
“But he died,” said Harry.
“Yeah,” said Sirius. “Stupid idiot . . . he joined the Death Eaters.”
“You’re kidding!”
“Come on, Harry, haven’t you seen enough of this house to tell what kind of wizards my family were?” said Sirius testily.

I want you to listen to me very carefully, Harry. You’re not a bad person. You’re a very good person, who bad things have happened to. Besides, the world isn’t split into good people and Death Eaters. We’ve all got both light and dark inside us.What matters is the part we choose to act on. That’s who we really are.”

What’s life without a little risk?

Sirius Black: I expect you’re tired of hearing this, but you look so like your father. Except your eyes. You have…
Harry: My mother’s eyes.

Sirius Black: It’s cruel that I got to spend so much time with James and Lily, and you so little. But know this; the ones that love us never really leave us. And you can always find them in here.
“Of course,” Sirius muttered, pacing up and down, “of course, he’d want to pin it on anyone but his own elf… and then he sacked her?”
“Yes,” said Hermione in a heated voice, “he sacked her, just because she hadn’t stayed in her tent and let herself get trampled -”
“Hermione, will you give it a rest with the elf!” said Ron.
Sirius shook his head and said, “She’s got the measure of Crouch better than you have, Ron. If you want to know what a mans like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.”
