An Open (Love) Letter To Remus Lupin

Dear Lupin,

First of all, I would like to tell you that for me you are one of the most inspirational and courageous fictional characters that I have ever come across in my life. Ever since, I have read about your life and struggles, you have inspired me in so many ways. There is so much that I want to say to you that I don’t know where to begin. So for me, the most admirable fact about you is that even though you were not one of the main characters of the Harry Potter series, you still managed to grab the attention of almost all the readers. I am pretty sure that there are many readers who would love to read a version of Remus Lupin and his life story. That type of love and admiration for a character, who does not even take center stage at any point is really something that in my opinion makes you stand out in the entire series.

As soon as you arrived in the third book and saved Harry and his friends from the dementors, you won a lot of my respect and admiration. At that time, I was very curious about you because your life story was completely shrouded in mystery. Later as the book progressed, we got to know how you were bitten by a werewolf when you were young and in turned condemned to live a dual life (both as a human being and werewolf). Because of this one incident, you had to struggle at every point for acceptance and love from society. When such things happen, it is so easy to become discouraged and depressed. BUT YOU ROSE ABOVE IT. And that is when my respect and admiration for you increased even further.

One of the best things that happened to me while reading the Harry Potter books, was that I discovered that there were so many layers to your character. You were always so brave, intelligent, trusting and above loyal. The amount of risk that you were ready to take for your friends and family was so amazing. Yes I admit that you had made a few mistakes, but you learnt from them and refused to give up till the very end. I loved that about you because I have always believed that the true mark of a person is when he refuses to let evil overpower him and continues to fight against it till the end.

Lupin, you were one of my biggest role models growing up, and I still look up to you even day. You taught me the importance of being fearless and brave, even in the face of adversity. Even though you were ostracized and rejected by the entire wizarding community, you never lost faith and hope in the basic goodness of people. That is why you fought against evil, even at the cost of personal losses. You always stood by your friends and family, even when you weren’t getting along with them. You were always there for them, even when they may not have noticed or appreciated it, and I think that’s something that deserves a huge amount of respect.

I always thought you kicked ass (especially when you encouraged Neville and when you were teaching Harry to fight the dementors), and you’re someone I aspire to be like. You are so clever and so full of love and kindness. You showed me that it is important to stand up for what I believe in and not to settle for less than what I deserve. In fact, there are so many lessons that you have taught me and I will never be able to repay you for that.

Also I’m really glad that you and Tonks ended up together. I think that together you showed the world that love can conquer a lot of problems and that complete acceptance can go a long way in making a relationship successful. However, I still feel, that J.K. Rowling should have focused a bit more on your relationship with her. In addition, a lot of people have condemned you for leaving Tonks when she was pregnant with your child. Even I was a bit disappointed by that decision of yours, but on the other hand I also understood why you did what you did. But what eventually matters is that you went back and I have always believed that heroes are not defined by their capacity to stay but by their decision to return. Everyone makes mistakes, very few have the courage to accept it and learn from it.

Lupin, your death shattered me. But I refuse to believe that death is the end of any journey. Your spirit and truth continues to inspire and strengthen me even today. As Dumbledore would say, to the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure.

In the end all I would like to say is that if I could inculcate even a fraction of your value system, then I would be really proud of myself. Thank you for helping me become the person I am today and always inspiring me at every stage. You will always remain one of my all time favorite teachers.

Sincerely, Mary Martina
