Who is Mary Shelley?

Mary Shelley (1797–1851) was an English novelist best known for her groundbreaking work Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus.” Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin was born in London, England, on August 30, 1797. She was the daughter of political philosopher William Godwin and feminist writer Mary Wollstonecraft.

Shelley’s most famous work, Frankenstein, was first published anonymously in 1818 when she was just 21 years old. Frankenstein is one of the earliest examples of science fiction and Gothic literature.

Throughout her life, Shelley wrote other novels, short stories, essays, and travelogues, but none achieved the same fame as Frankenstein. After his death, she also edited and published her husband’s works, the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.

Beyond her literary accomplishments, Mary Shelley played a significant role in the Romantic and Gothic literary movements of the early 19th century.
